Yantian Port wins award

From: Shenzhen Daily | Updated:2024-07-04

T Asian Freight, Logistics, and Supply Chain Awards, which mark the pinnacle of achievement in the logistics industry, recently hosted a ceremony in Shanghai, honoring excellence and innovation. Yantian Port clinched the Best Green Container Terminal award for the fourth time, solidifying its position as the only terminal globally to achieve this remarkable feat.

In a move towards sustainability, Yantian Port in 2023 managed to reduce its carbon emissions by nearly 20,000 tons compared to the previous year, equivalent to planting 1.09 million trees. Over the past decade, the port succeeded in slashing carbon emissions per container by an impressive 33%, earning it well-deserved acclaim as a beacon of eco-friendly practices in the industry.

The port’s commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond mere accolades; it has embraced electrification of terminal equipment and trailer operations. Presently boasting a fleet of 216 electric-powered gantry cranes, the transition from diesel to electric propulsion has resulted in a remarkable 95% reduction in emissions per operation.

Pioneering the use of LNG-powered trailers, Yantian port stands out as the first port in the country to widely adopt these eco-friendly vehicles, with LNG trailers at one point constituting 60% of the total internal trailer fleet. Furthermore, the port is actively exploring the adoption of battery-powered electric trailers as replacements for traditional diesel and LNG-fueled vehicles to achieve nearly zero carbon emissions.

Moreover, introducing electric stackers in the container yards has led to a significant 51% decrease in carbon emissions compared to their oil-powered counterparts. Embracing multimodal transportation, Yantian Port has established a robust network, with 14 inland ports, 31 sea-rail intermodal routes, 13 barge combination terminals, and 17 barge feeder routes currently operational, servicing a wide expanse encompassing the Greater Bay Area as well as southwest and central regions.
