Shenzhen is set to build a national demonstration area for autonomous vehicles, also referred to as intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs), that is supported by a robust network of test roads, Shenzhen Evening News reported.
As of May 2024, the city had designated and opened 944 kilometers of roads for testing various ICVs.
Shenzhen has issued 1,037 road testing licenses to 19 companies, which has resulted in the deployment of 349 ICVs. This is a significant increase compared with the end of 2023, with road mileage up by 12.65% and the number of licenses rising by 48.14%.
On July 30, Shenzhen launched the “Action Plan for Accelerating the Construction of Shenzhen as a Pioneer City in Artificial Intelligence.” The plan outlines key initiatives for intelligent driving, including the establishment of a national demonstration area and the creation of a comprehensive matrix of smart driving products.
Key features of the action plan include the optimization of ultra-fast charging networks for new energy vehicles and the development of both online and real-world testing environments for ICVs.
The plan also seeks to expand smart transportation scenarios, with an emphasis on fixed routes, closed parks, and unmanned taxi services.
Shenzhen, as part of the initiative, will create management regulations for ICVs and a comprehensive management system for access control, operational supervision, and accountability.
The city will also encourage firms to work with each other and contribute to national and international regulatory frameworks, the report said.
