THE Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport handled 206,219 flights during the first half of this year, a year-on-year increase of 10.43%, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
The average number of flights per day stood at 1,133, with the daily peak reaching a record of 1,354 flights.
On Aug. 2, Shenzhen launched its first direct passenger route to Budapest, Hungary, further expanding flights to Europe. This follows the launch of a new cargo route to Abu Dhabi on July 14, marking the launch of the 18th new international cargo route this year.
The airport recorded substantial growth in both passenger and cargo traffic this year. As of July 17, passenger traffic at the airport had reached 32.267 million trips, nearly a 20% increase from 2023. International and regional passenger traffic surged by nearly 180% from the previous year.
The volume of cargo handled by the airport reached 934,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of over 16%. Specifically, the volume of international cargo rose to 469,000 tons, up over 21%, and domestic cargo reached 464,000 tons, growing by more than 11%.
In the first half of the year, Shenzhen either resumed or expanded eight international passenger routes to destinations such as Mexico City, Cairo, and Sapporo. Furthermore, the Shenzhen airport is the only airport within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area that offers direct flights to Brussels, Tel Aviv, and Mexico City.
Also, the volume of cross-border e-commerce air freight at the airport skyrocketed by 68.5% year on year. With the launch of a new cargo route to Abu Dhabi, the airport now services seven cargo destinations in the Middle East with over 60 flights per week.
Since the start of the year, the airport has improved capacity by teaming up with 13 airlines, including Qatar Airways and Lufthansa Cargo, resulting in the addition of three new international cargo routes to Budapest, Kuching, and Abu Dhabi.
With a total of 38 international and cross-border cargo destinations, the airport is on track to achieve a one-day delivery time for domestic goods originating in Shenzhen and a two-to-three-day delivery timeframe for international goods going to major cities across Asia and around the globe.
