The southern section of Shenzhen Metro Line 13, stretching from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint Station to Hi-Tech Central Station, began a three-month trial run without passengers yesterday in preparation for its official launch at the end of the year.
The segment of the fully automated line has seven stations, namely the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint, Talent Park, Houhai, Keyuan, Yuehaimen, Shenzhen University, and Hi-Tech Central stations. Upon opening, passengers will be able to transfer to Line 2 and Line 11 at Houhai Station, Line 2 at Keyuan Station, Line 9 at Yuehaimen Station, and Line 1 at Shenzhen University Station.
The trial operation is an essential prerequisite for passenger service, simulating full-scale operations to rigorously test the trains, power supply, signals, communication systems, and other essential facilities. During this period, the trains will follow a planned schedule for at least 20 days to ensure all systems meet operational standards, according to line operator HKMTR Shenzhen.
Line 13’s trains are equipped with the GoA4 transport system, the world’s most advanced driverless train operating technology. They also feature a management system capable of real-time monitoring, diagnostics, assessments, and analysis of operating systems. Enhanced safety measures include object detection, collision prevention, and derailment checks, according to the operator.
Running south-north from Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint to Guangming District over a distance of 22.4 kilometers, the Line 13 route covers key areas such as the Houhai CBD, the Shenzhen Hi-tech Industrial Park, and the Liuxiandong Headquarters Base. It has 16 stations, 12 of which are interchange stations. Once operational, Line 13 is expected to relieve traffic congestion, especially in the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park in Nanshan District.
